The Hawaii Military Surfing Organization (HMSO) was originally founded as “The Ali’i He’e Nalu Surfing Club” in 1969 by a small group of military men stationed at Schofield Barracks. The purpose of the club was to create an environment where battle-hardened troopers could share in their love of surfing while rotating in and out of the Vietnam Conflict. Many wars later, the Haleiwa-based club is still educating new military surfers and donating old surfboards to underprivileged children, as well as running its Community Outreach Programs such as the Wounded Warrior Surf Program.
