Hawaiian for fierce, Makaha is located on the west side of O`ahu and is the birthplace of big-wave surfing. Created by Honolulu's John Lind, and co-sponsored by the Waikiki Surf Club and the Waianae Lions Club, the International Surfing Championships was held annually at Makaha from 1954 until 1971. Referred to as surfing's supreme test by Time Magazine, the inaugural championship was the world's first international surf competition.
