Hawaiian for fierce, Makaha is located on the west side of O`ahu and is the birthplace of big-wave surfing. Created by Honolulu's John Lind, and co-sponsored by the Waikiki Surf Club and the Waianae Lions Club, the International Surfing Championships was held annually at Makaha from 1954 until 1971.
