After WWII, President Dwight D. Eisenhower realized the importance of an interstate highway system that would provide evacuation routes and rapid movement of military equipment across the country and from base to base. In 1956 the Federal Aid Highway Act was signed and the national network of "Interstates" began, including Hawaii's H1.
