In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The first meet was held in October 1960, in which boys and girls under the age of 16 were eligible to compete. The following year, the "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members a monthly surfing and paddling contest, as well as a yearly surfing championship that would be held for the public. The club remained intact for 12 years, acting as a positive force in the lives of many young Hawaiian athletes.
