Dick Brewer created the performance board of choice for the biggest names in surfing during the sixties. Everyone from Buzzy Trent and Jeff Hakman to Fred Van Dyke and Alton Tavaris rode one. As did International Surfing Hall of Famer and Makaha champ, Fred Hemmings. Butch Van Artsdalen won the 1st Haleiwa Championship on a Surfboards Hawai’i board. Reno Abellira rode boards shaped by Dick Brewer. There was even a Buffalo Model, named for Buffalo “Mr. Makaha” Keaulana, who preferred Surfboards Hawai’i to any other maker. Raised in Southern California, Dick Brewer shaped his first board – a 9’ 10” gun – in 1959. Two years later, he would revolutionize the sport of surfing. Today, he still does.
